If anyone’s been to Madi Diaz’s residency at the Bootleg this month, the sonic shift in the singer-songwriter’s sound may have come as a surprise. Sure, Diaz has flirted with bubblegum pop before, but her alt-country and folk roots remained the core of the charm on her previous records. However, new songs such as “Stay Together,” show a bouncier side of Diaz, as well as a bigger vocal range. With an undeniable chorus and optimistic message, bigger beats and clap-happy percussion replace her hushed tones and delicate guitar strumming on the new single. Co-written with and produced by Harlan Silverman (who is responsible for not only his own pop hits but others’ as well), the forthcoming EP is a boost in energy and a new flavor for the palette of her longtime fans. Diaz’s new EP is slated for a release in 2014.
