Ears Wide Open: Wild Betsy

The songs on Wild Betsy’s debut EP “Hypnopompic” sound as if they might have a secret past. The young L.A. trio of singer-guitarist Tad Ha, bassist Marc Aren and drummer Mark Mallory deal in dark psych-pop that you imagine emerged from nasty ’60s hangover. “Whirlwind” announces itself with some insistent guitar and twisted soul; the six-minute “Shapes” segues from bad trip to trippier trip; and “We Are Stars” gallops into Ariel Pink territory. Yeah, Wild Betsy’s music has been called “dad-psych,” but if that’s the case, pop’s got a few stories to tell.
