Valerie June’s voice may be unusually bright, but it embodies everything she grew up with in Jackson, Tenn., then later in Memphis. Most importantly, June’s voice is her own. Her debut album “Pushin’ Against a Stone” focuses on the roots of her musical upbringing by combining a plethora of sounds including folk, blues, gospel, soul, country, Appalachian and bluegrass. From the sweet “Tennessee Time” to the rollicking “Workin’ Woman Blues,” June’s multi-instrumental talents make her debut an experimental ride of kaleidoscopic folk melodies. The Dan Auerbach-produced album is a follow-up to “Valerie June and The Tennessee Express.“Â A few more familiar names include Booker T Jones, Richard Swfit and Peter Sabak, who lend a hand in recording on organ, drums and keys, and bass, respectively. Valerie June’s “Pushin’ Against a Stone” is out now via Concord Music Group.
