Video: NONONO, ‘Pumpin Blood’

The Sounds aren’t the only Swedes coming through L.A. this week. The Stockholm-based trio NONONO makes their L.A. debut in support of their “Pumpin Blood” EP, and any music lover who revels in pop tunes has certainly already been counting down the days for their arrival. Boasting a whistle that hasn’t been this catchy this Peter Bjorn & John’s “Young Folks,” the title track frankly pumps up the mood with its bright anthemic chorus. However, NONONO, whose members are comprised of vocalist Stina Wäppling and producers Tobias “Astma” Jimson and Michel Rocwell, don’t pride themselves on cookie-cutter pop. With Wäppling previously working in a hospice, much of her experiences at the day job has brought in darker elements to swirl around with staple beats. Older songs such as “Down Under” has Wäppling’s frosty vocals asking “Is it your heart / Or is that just thunder?” while newer songs on the EP like “Like the Wind” have a wounded, ominous Lykke Li beat that drives their sound more toward the Knife than Robyn. Either way, NONONO has us saying yes, yes, yes. “Pumpin Blood” is out now via Warner Bros.
