In conceiving Best Coast’s new video for the song “I Don’t Know,” frontwoman Bethany Cosentino says she was going for something “super fun and L.A.-inspired without doing anything at the beach like so many of our videos.” So director Patrick O’Dell convened at a Sun Valley skate park, where, Cosentino says, “I got to hang with my friends and a bunch of hot skater boys all day.” All good, we suppose. Best Coast’s new mini-album, “Fade Away,” is just out on Cosentino’s own Jewel City label, and its seven songs of signature Bobb Bruno guitar fuzz move away from the color-by-numbers Golden State idolatry of the trio’s first two full-lengths. Especially notable are “Who Have I Become?” and “Fear of My Identity,” which suggest that in Cosentino world, it’s not all beach sunsets, cats and junk food. Best Coast tours with the Pixies in the new year, but no SoCal dates are currently scheduled.
I wonder what sort of major outdoor festival would prevent Pixies from scheduling California tour dates…
