Up-and-coming Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jarell Perry has already worked with the diverse likes of Childish Gambino, Diplo, Fat Joe, Rusko and Usher, and is set to break out with the release of his forthcoming “White EP” on Dec. 10. The former UCLA student released his debut album “Simple Things” earlier this year. Its “future R&B” or “alt-n-b” sound expands the palette and mixes electronic, pop and soul flavors into something different, drawing comparisons to Frank Ocean and Miguel. The White EP’s first single, “Eleven” featuring Chuck Inglish, was produced by Hassan Johnson and fuses Perry’s soulful voice over a dubby beat and a “This Is Spinal Tap” reference. Johnson also produced “Braindead,” its second single, about the disconnect between one’s heart and mind. The track has a slow-burning warmth to it, with Perry’s hazy and sublime vocals lofting over a washed-out atmospheric beat with the hook, “My heart knows what to do, the way I feel for you / My heart knows what to do, but maybe I’m braindead.” With a voice that seems to know no bounds, it appears we’ve only begun to see what this young artist has to offer.
