Brendan Canning‘s solo material is quite different from the complex, sprawling indie rock his main band Broken Social Scene creates. His first debut “Something For All Of Us” was much more delicate, and his sophomore solo album “You Gots 2 Chill” is executed in a similar vein. The only differences here are warm, homey feelings – which makes sense, since he wrote most of it on his porch with his pooch and guitar – and the lack of BSS collaborations; he also decided not to release it on Arts & Crafts. Instead he’s released the new record, his first true solo effort, on Draper Street Records, his own label. The lilting lead single “Plugged In” is now followed by the beautiful “Bullied Days,” a floating track featuring Snowblink’s Daniela Gesundheit on vocals in the midst of slide guitar and synths. With these simple yet moving tunes, it’s safe to say Canning has gotten the message out: calm down, breathe, relax and take your surroundings in. The accompanying music video for the latter track tells the story of a little girl brightening a sad man’s day with just a few small things and fits right in with the albums theme. “You Gots 2 Chill” is out now.
