Yuna’s smoky vocals earned her a spotlight in her home country as a singer-songwriter early on, but it wasn’t until Pharrell Williams took her under his wings to produce the seductive anthem “Live Your Life,” that the Malaysian singer began to garner praise her sophisticated delivery. Putting a Southeast Asian spin on pop music, Yuna follows up 2012’s self-titled debut with “Nocturnal,” which boasts a livelier soundscape than her previous releases. Songs like her latest single, “Rescue,” is a prime example of Yuna’s sonic shift into a more uplifting realm. In comparison to the track we premiered back in 2011, the single is rather upbeat (and an ode to women around the world). It’s accessible and enchanting. Yuna shines brighter here than ever before, and it’s almost if we can hear her smiling through all of it. “Nocturnal” is out now via Verve Records.
