First Friday of the year, and a big one at that:

‣ “FOMO” stands for Fear of Missing Out, and the annual January event aims to showcase (mostly local) emerging bands who figure to make their mark in the upcoming year. Hard to argue with this year’s lineup, which features Lo-Fang (full-length en route Feb. 25 via 4AD and a March tour opening for Lorde) along with Avid Dancer, Bogan Via, Fever the Ghost, Hindu Pirates, Kera & the Lesbians, Liphemra, Santoros, Tall Tales & the Silver Lining, Wet & Reckless and Spazzkid. It all happens at the Echo and Echoplex.
‣ The second of the eight-day, no-cover-charge Satellite Nights series brings Evan Voytas to the Satellite, along with Dark Furs, Y LUV and Tulips.
‣ NYC Afrobeat agitators Zongo Junction bring their 11-piece band – horns and rhythm section blaring – to the Bootleg Theater, where they are supported by fellow New Yorkers Brass Magic and L.A.’s Chicano Batman. Above is Zongo Junction’s video for “The Van That Got Away,” which follows the plight of a used-car salesman named Pavel.
‣ And Meiko heads up a loaded night at the Hotel Café – ShyBoy, Remy St. Claire, Kevin Earnest and Little Galaxies all join in the fun.
