In case nobody’s said it to you in the past five minutes: Happy new year. And in the spirit of all that’s new, I’ll have a healthy batch of fresh tunes tonight on the L.A. Buzz Bands Show on KCSN (88.5 FM, streaming at KCSN.org). Starting at 9 p.m., I’ll have songs from Silversun Pickups, Summer Darling, the Neighbourhood, Lo-Fang and Bonfire Beach – plus, a radio premiere of the new single from Pr0files. I’ll nod to a couple of the January residencies that kick off this week, and to end the show, I’m going to launch a segment I’ll call “Happenings 10 Years Time Ago” (for lack of a more original title). Here, I will dig into the archives for a band I covered a decade ago and spin one of their tunes. In tonight’s case, it’s a band whose album, owing to various record-label machinations, never actually got released, although finished promo copies made it into journalists’ hands. So consider this one a lost gem; I do. Tune in, won’t you? After the jump, the playlist:
Silversun Pickups, “Cannibal”
Bonfire Beach, “Highway 57”
Pr0files, “Call Yourself a Lover”
The Neighbourhood, “Silver”
Lo-Fang, “Look Away”
Summer Darling, “Santa Anas”
Dreamland, “Scapegoat”
The Entrance Band, “Spider”
Vanaprasta, “Supernumerary (Effie House Sessions)”
DWNTWN, “Stood Me Up”
The Milk Carton Kids, “Ash & Clay”
The Chapin Sisters, “Crying in the Rain” (Everly Brothers cover)
Tom Brosseau, “Cradle Your Device”
Yoya, “King of Nothing”
The Peak Show, “Reckless Love” (from an unreleased 2004 album, featuring Holland Greco on lead vocals)
