Connan Mockasin’s music is all … well, gooey. The New Zealand-bred, London-based artist has weathered a slow climb to notoriety, finally getting notice (and a U.S. release, via the Mexican Summer label) for his November album “Caramel” – which, he told NME, was based entirely on what he imagined the confection would sound like. Mission accomplished. The man born Connan Tant Hosford plays with tones and grooves like putty, morphing in slow-motion from one melody to the next, his falsetto reaching for some Prince-like sensuality. The Daniel Brereton-directed video for the comma-spliced “I’m the Man, That Will Find You” finds the singer seducing a woman at a nicely appointed mansion. No need to add sugar.
