Hospitality expresses no regrets about their indie-pop debut in 2012, but they surely are looking forward to abandoning the term ‘twee’ from here on. The Brooklyn-based trio found a serendipitous home in Merge Records back in 2011, perfectly defining their sunny and charming flair and garnering quite a bit of attention for their self-titled album. Two years later, the threesome’s confidence is further expressed in their upcoming release, “Trouble,” out Jan. 28. While they adhere to minimalism, they trade in their upbeat pop hooks for a mellow, natural sound. Exchanging harmonies for vocal reverb, the stripped-down instrumentation gives Hospitality a sophisticated edge that will likely group them with sophisticated alt-rockers such as Silversun Pickups. “Rockets and Jets” closes with a dark, bass-driven instrumental that defines their new direction. Somewhere between a long-winded late Death Cab For Cutie track and hazy ’80s rock, Hospitality lives.
