Ears Wide Open: Wax Children

What happens when you combine psych-rock, shoegaze and lo-fi? Well, you get noisy experimentation, but more importantly, you get Wax Children. The Covina-bred quartet mixes fuzzy ’90s rock guitars and ’70s-styled reverb, fashioning rough-edged rockers that are somewhere between trippy and time travel. The band, formerly known as Django’s Tiger, started when singer Mr. Wall, and guitarist Cal Jones got together in 2012. Their initial  “Dreamsick” EP was more along the lines of surf-rock, but their new sound, with chaotic noise effects and spacious delays, is hypnotic and at some points just plain eerie. Their new eight-song EP, “Angst,” was released on Jan. 4, and the band is already making plans to jump back into the studio and record more in Feburary. So relax and see if you can smell the clover.
