Mirah

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, aka Mirah, is back, and this time she’s got a new label and a record all on her own. Although the 2011 Merril Garbus-produced collaboration album she did with Thao Nguyen was nothing less than excellent, there’s something powerful about the Brooklyn singer all by her lonesome. Balancing fragility and strength, Mirah’s complex and painstakingly beautifully lyrics that dance around off-kilter pop arrangements create a spark that is rare these days. Her new single “Oxen Hope” is a bit warbled with vocoder, but the minimal yet bold percussion underneath her sweet vocals still stand out in the same way they did on her previous solo record “(a)spera.” The new record “Changing Light” no doubt covers every bit of light and shadow of a recent breakup; it’s slated for a May 13 release via her own label Absolute Magnitude with support from her longtime buddies K Records.
