Dan Croll’s U.S. debut “Sweet Disarray” is like a good glass of lemonade. It’s crisp, refreshing and it quenches your thirst perfectly on a bright sunny day. Croll, one of the U.K.’s rising songwriters, has managed to write a pop album that has everything in it without it being a mess. It’s utterly pleasant without a hint of cheesy or romantic undertones. At just 23 years old, the Liverpool artist has proved his time at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts wasn’t a waste. (Actually, he won the national Songwriter of the Year award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund and was also hand-picked to have a one-to-one with LIPA founder Sir Paul McCartney while attending.) Songs like the tropical and horn-heavy “Compliment Your Soul,” the soulful guitar ballad “Home” and electro-pop happy “In/Out” are just a few gems on Croll’s debut that show his quirky intellect. Heck, even his video for “From Nowhere” finds a smart way to illustrate ordinary love lyrics like “Every time I stare into your eyes.” Dan Croll’s “Sweet Disarray” is out today via Capitol. File next to Paul Simon, Grizzly Bear, Beck.
