Since we witnessed Moses Sumney‘s first proper L.A. show back in June 2013, the singer-songwriter’s buzz exponentially grew and led the way for opening slots for artist such Beck, Thundercat and PAPA this year. He’s also already been globetrotting, playing shows in Europe (he ended up playing with Solange in London). There wasn’t a single doubt in regards to our prediction for Sumney’s popularity in 2014, and the Bootleg residency he just wrapped up on Monday – packed all four weeks – was beyond the type of proof we would see. With just a couple of singles released online during all of this, it’s exciting to hear Sumney will finally be putting out his debut EP, “Mid-City Island,” which is slated for an April 7 release. The EP includes new single “Man on the Moon,” a ghostly yet intimate tune where Sumney’s electric guitar-picking skills are at the forefront and his vocals are more on the delicate side. The lovely combination of folk and soul are still highlights here, and so is his range (make sure you listen for that last note), but Sumney is having more fun experimenting here. The “Mid-City Island” EP was recorded in Sumney’s bedroom and will be going straight to cassette tape by way of an ’80s tracker. Upcoming: Thirteen April tour dates supporting Local Natives.

i was there at Bootleg Bar last june and was amused by Moses set as it was all looping of vocal sounds an held my interest for his 30min. I did think he had a great stage manner. When I saw him the next week in The Theatre I admit I thought there was more to him than I had given him credit for the week before as his voice just caught me in such a positive way. In my travels for music here and there our paths would cross at Abbot Kinney, Echo Park Rising, Echoplex and each time I saw an artist growing as Echoplex was done without a single loop. But last monday when he dropped a 75-80 min set on the closing of his residency I realised I had witnessed an artist grow beyond what many could ever have guessed over the last 9 months as he did the solo loops and also played in duo with a violin player and trio with violin and guitar and final full band with horns. It wqas only fitting I was seeing it in the same building I first saw him. By the way……….what became of King, maybe moses should have them open his next show.
