Who:Â Wye Oak at in the Gobi tent
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â Beyond their roots.
Memorable Because:Â “Hi, Coachellans! Coachellers?” Jenn Wasner wasn’t sure what to call the crowd (she eventually decided she liked “Coachellites”), but what she and bandmate Andy Stacks knew was that this was a “big ol’ stage for a tiny little band.” No matter. The Baltimore duo’s set and preview of their forthcoming album “Shriek” (out April 29 via Merge) rang loud and clear with songs about both anguish and gumption. Calm, cool and collected, Wasner and Stacks played a handful of new electro-tinged songs (“The Tower,” “Glory”)Â for the crowd committed enough to make one of the earlier sets of the day. “This is the first time we’ve ever played them on the West Coast and it feels all right,” Wasner shared. Although much less guitar-centric, new songs were well-received and fans even got a special dedication: “This one’s got California written all over it. It’s called ‘Freak.'”
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Waxahatchee:Â Katie Crutchfield is great, but Jenn Wasner has her beat in the heartache department.
