Who: Kid Cudi on the Main Stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: The party kid
Memorable Because: Much like Wiz Khalifa’s main stage set in 2011, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) had his charm on full blast in igniting a massive dance party with a crowd that seemed to grow bigger with each song. “This is my first time here,” shared Cudi. “Y’all popping the cherry with me?” An eruption of cheers rippled throughout the festival grounds in response to the hip-hop star who kept the groove going with songs like “Day ‘N’ Night,” “Mr. Rager,” “Soundtrack 2 My Life” and “Erase Me.” Cudi had his space mountain set-up behind him on stage, but this was another barebones hip-hop set otherwise. Running purely on his own enthusiasm, Kid Cudi kept his fans captivated. The generation gap full of hype kids may have been Outkast’s downfall the previous night, but Kid Cudi’s fusion of hip-hop, rock and electronica offered mass appeal. He didn’t deny his fans of his biggest hit either. Dedicating “Pursuit of Happiness” to MGMT ( his “favorite band in the world”) and festival-goers, Kid Cudi gave it his all during the closing number, which ultimately turned into the extended remix version. Jumping down to the barricades to dance with his fans, Kid Cudi’s Coachella debut went off without a hitch.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Washed Out: Yeah, but can they rock a crop top and cut-off jeans like Kid Cudi did?
