Who: Future Islands in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: He’s a maniac.
Memorable Because: With Sam Herring’s intoxicating stage presence and a full tent of fans to reciprocate the energy, it was clear that Baltimore’s Future Islands would return to Coachella very soon and most likely on a bigger stage. The synth-pop trio (with touring drummer in tow) were relentless when it came to high energy and melodrama during songs like “Balance,” “Before the Bridge” and “Viero’s Eye.” Herring was delightfully uncontrollable; his menacing baritone reached every note and his dance moves were shameless. “I want to dance a little harder for you guys, but it’s slippery up here. Maybe I’ll work on some new moves,” said Herring. Some insane body rolls followed suit during “Tin Man,” followed by even more outrageous hip thrusts before they went into “Seasons (Waiting On You).” If you have a friend who’s into Shakespearean poetry, metal and synth music, then bring him or her to a Future Islands show to make ’em swoon.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At MGMT: You’re still into that?
