Jessy Lanza is a winner if you’re into Chet Faker, Rhye and Aaliyah. The dub chanteuse recently released her stunningly seductive debut “Pull My Hair Back,” a collection of R&B songs sparkling in disco and wonderfully warped in shrouded beats. The Hamilton, Ontario-based singer coos in songs like “Keep On Moving” and hypnotizes with sweet chants in tracks like “Fuck Diamond,” and even when vocals only seem to make an appearance on tracks such as “Kathy Lee,” her breathy lyrics pull you in anyway. Of course, Lanza’s beats come by way of her collaboration with Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan, and although bright vocals often seem treacly couched in these kind of electronics, Lanza’s delivery and sophisticated style makes her outshine the rest. Even her Lee Skinner-directed video for “Kathy Lee,” has heart to it. Starring “Jed the Dancing Guy” from her hometown, the combination of minimalism and happiness is taken to a new level. (You can read more about Jed’s story here.) Â Jessy Lanza’s “Pull My Hair Back” is out now via Hyperdub.
