Manchester Orchestra may have taken a little longer than usual between albums this time around, but the latest record from Atlanta, Ga.,-based rock quintet may be their best release yet. “Cope,” the album out now on Loma Vista and their own label Favorite Gentlemen, teems with raucous hooks and unbridled energy that could fill any arena. A variety of anthems like the dynamic and pop-heavy “Every Stone” and the commanding “Top Notch” make “Cope” a wild ride that Manchester Orchestra fans will find exhilarating if not addicting. Not even the folk side projects lead vocalist Andy Hull takes part in (Right Away, Great Captain! and Bad Brooks) could bring soft influences to this record. Self-produced but mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur, Jr., Kurt Vile, The Thermals, Sonic Youth), “Cope” does more than tell the tale of survival. It soars, it chugs and it lives.
