Gardens & Villa and Tycho‘s pairing may seem unlikely when it comes to musical stylings, but Thursday’s sold-out show at the Fonda proved otherwise. Gardens & Villa played new songs off their sophomore album “Dunes” (out now on Secretly Canadian), once again confirming that the Santa Barbara-based quintet has no trouble making the combination of jazz flute and falsetto seem chic. Tycho, aka Scott Hansen, and his band were 30 minutes late to the stage but any anxiety over set times were immediately washed away with songs off his new album “Awake” (out now via Ghostly International). Considering Hansen’s work as a professional photographer and designer under the moniker ISO50 (you can also find him on Instagram at the same handle), the impressive visuals of water, dessert and space also didn’t come as a surprise. Ambient music in its truest form, Tycho’s headlining set made you feel as if you were surfing on the moon.
