Ears Wide Open: Sego

Having used the same escape hatch from Utah as fellow Provo natives the Moth & the Flame, Spencer Petersen and Thomas Carroll have played in L.A. bands such as Eyes Lips Eyes and SWIMM. Now singer-guitarist Petersen is debuting his own project, Sego, and judging from the first single “20 Years Tall,” it ought to bring all the early-Aughts dance-punk fans out of the woodwork. Wiry and wry, the song has drawn immediate comparisons to Bloc Party and LCD Soundsystem, but it deftly stays away from formula, not wearing out the chorus’ welcome and injecting a surprising breakdown 2 1/2 minutes in. Mike Goldman and Mike Griffin will join Petersen and Carroll to round out the live lineup. More, please.
