Above: That’s the video for the title track to Parquet Courts’ new album “Sunbathing Animal,” which comes out next week. This Wednesday, the Brooklyn four-piece plays the Roxy.

Our staff picks of the week:

@KRBronson recommends: Throwing Muses … Where do you start? They were among the smartest of the smart in their first decade-long run (1986-’96), as challenging musically as intellectually, embodying the “college rock” of the era and setting the bar high for many bands that followed. They were the first American band signed to 4AD  and have released nine albums, the latest being “Purgatory / Paradise” after their second reformation last year. They do two shows this week at the Bootleg, Thursday and Friday, with Tanya Donelly (with stepsister Kristin Hersh, a founding member of Throwing Muses before she went on to play in the Breeders and then form Belly) opening.

@Seraphina_L recommends: This week is so chock-full of great shows, so I’ll recommend a bit of everything: Chet Faker on Tuesday at the Roxy for the downtempo electronic soul fans; First Aid Kit on Wednesday at the El Rey Theatre for the folk-Americana fans; Banks on Thursday at the El Rey Theatre for those looking for some dark R&B; Potty Mouth on Thursday at the Echo for some punk, Luscious Jackson on Friday at the El Rey Theatre for those looking to fill their ‘90s nostalgia quota; Seahaven on Saturday at the Troubadour for some solid indie rock; and Moonchild on Sunday at the Bootleg for some neo-soul.
