“I’m not that old / but I’m getting pretty wise,” sings Mario Cuomo sings on “Southern Comfort,” the opening track to the Orwells‘ new album “Disgraceland.” He’s right. Coumo and his cohorts were only 17 years old when they first busted out of the Chicago suburbs and aren’t much older now, but oh how they have relentlessly toured the world and fought for rock n’ roll since then. The follow-up to their 2012 debut “Remember When” has just one track less, but the tunes are more refined and even more charismatic, which is saying a lot because there aren’t many teenage garage-rock bands who can leave skid marks with a live show like these boys can. Listening to “Let It Burn” alone provides a nice glimpse into how the Orwells have grown up since we first heard “Mallrats (La La La).” They even do a bit of reminiscing on the album’s closing track “North Ave.,” proving they remember where they’ve come from, they remember what they used to do for fun and most importantly, they remember dreaming what they could do. This sophomore effort is a nice milestone for the Orwells in terms of composition, but they also remain raw and boisterous as ever. “Disgraceland” is out now via Canvasback and Atlantic Records.
