Torch singer, jazz swinger, punk provocatrice, ’70s pop siren – Holland Greco plays all of these and maybe a few more on her long-awaited solo debut “Volume One” (out today via Zappa Records). A mainstay of the L.A. scene since her days fronting the Peak Show a decade or so ago, Greco wields a ukulele like a Flying Twin and her versatile vocals like twine, tying listeners up in phrasing and wit. “Volume One” is actually a two-headed beast; five audaciously orchestrated originals comprise the first side. Side B, which Greco originally intended to release as an EP before her affiliation with the label run by the Zappa Family Trust, is titled “Murdergram: Songs of the Misfits,” offering up five, steeped-in-darkness covers of songs by the horror-punk legends. If it sounds like a lot for one record, it is. But Greco has always been as impossible to pigeonhole (thankfully) as she is impishly subversive. “Volume One” gives you all sides.
