Scott Hutchison, the frontman of Scottish anthemic rockers Frightened Rabbit, introduces his solo project Owl John in verse: “John is a homeless. John is a priest. John is a witness. John is a beast. John is a weirdo. John is a thief. John is a wino. Listen, bleed, weep.” The tunes on Owl John’s forthcoming self-titled album (due Aug. 5 via Canvasback/Atlantic) were made with Frightened Rabbit mate Andy Monaghan and Simon Liddell of Olympic Swimmers. It features the same gritty poesy fans have seen on four Frightened Rabbit full-lengths, only … well, grittier. “Hate Music,” for instance. Or don’t.
