As if Kan Wakan needed any more cinematic touches, the Los Angeles experimental orchestral pop collective closed out the Getty Center’s summer series Saturdays Off the 405 with a slew of special guests this weekend. Heavenly harmonies from the Silver Lake Chorus magically cushioned the smokey riffs from new Kan Wakan vocalist Brittany “KP” Mullen on “Like I Need You,” while violinist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson led viola-cello duo Strings Massive (Thomas Lea, Claire Courchene)Â in sweeping melodies during songs like “Forever Found.” Kan Wakan’s more psychedelic and funkier cuts such as closing number “Midnight Moon Pt. II” were also elevated with some outstanding saxophone (Ted Tafaro) and keytar (Brandon Coleman) solos. All in all, the collective’s genre-sprawling compositions made for an exceptionally sophisticated night.

what was a night i was looking forward to for some time turned into a evening of puzzle—just who the heck was that girl singing and where was Kristianne Bautista. it is not till i read your review that i know who that vocalist was. i went back home and checked out facebook and twitter and .com and Kan Wakan had no mention what so ever other than posted pictures of the new trio. People posted they liked the new look giving me some feeling they thought Kristianne had just changed her hair color. Makes me wonder why the band was so silent on the change. maybe they don’t view it as positive. They have to run fast now to just get back to where they were. Atleast I can always remember the Echoplex residency when i knew i was watching a “band” that was at the top of it’s game each night. i do look forward to catching Kan Wakan again to see where they go from here.
