Casey Dienel has always marched to the beat of her own drum (she can even make a Justin Timberlake song haunting), but her third studio album under the moniker White Hinterland perhaps reveals her lush, out-of-the-box songwriting at its best. The Massachusetts singer-songwriter excels with rich, dark R&B tunes sheathed in yearning yet trembling vocals on songs like the title track of her latest album “Baby.” Her notes might not be considered pretty-pop-perfect, but it’s the raw delivery that make the melodies sound that much more honest. “Ring the Bell,” although a more upbeat pop tune, is another standout track that shimmers, percolates and echoes all at once via loops and layers. Dienel’s work as White Hinterland is complex and daring and will hold up much longer than those pop stars that get by with auto-tune. “Baby” is out now via Dead Oceans.
