When Kate Boy first came on to the scene, their song “Northern Lights” caught the attention of the Knife fans with its moody, minimal beats and shrill yet catchy choruses. The comparison may have also come by-way-of Australian singer-songwriter Kate Akhurst finding producers Markus Dextegen and Hampus Nordgren Hemlin (also of Rocket Boy) in Stockholm, Sweden. No matter. The new trio went beyond similarities by releasing “Northern Lights” EP, which was followed up by singles “The Way We Are” and “Self Control.” The latter seemed to strike a chord with dance floor goers. To kick off their U.S. tour, Kate Boy has released their new single “Open Fire,” a tune that seems to balance the darkness of their debut single and the pep of their most popular tune. Singing with more urgency (at least as much as you can with “oh-oh-oh” choruses these days), Akhurst and company continue their balancing act between electronica and pop music. “Open Fire” is from Kate Boy’s forthcoming debut full-length.
