After a five -plus year hiatus, L.A.’s psychedelic brooders Xu Xu Fang are back and plenty of people are happy about it. Others are so glad they’re back that the band’s latest album has some special touches from special guests. As we previously mentioned, Queens of the Stone Age bass player Michael Shuman has contributed to a few tracks to the forthcoming album and Alain Johannes (QOTSA, Chris Cornell, and Arctic Monkeys) has lent a hand in producing and mixing. Another collaboration happened when Reuben Wu, an accomplished photographer and founding member of British electronic pop band Ladytron, directed the music video for the band’s tune “Friend to the Unknown.” Wu describes the music video as “a story of sublime moments, vast landscapes and immense forces of nature” and adds, “It was important that it echoed the sonic geography of this dark and dreamy song.” It’s a stunning composition of visuals and an appropriate accompaniment to Xu Xu Fang’s sprawling psychedelia and shoegaze moments.
