After winning the U.K.’s Mercury Music Prize in October for their sophomore album “Dead,” Young Fathers have released a new track called “Soon Come Soon.” Over a buzzing mid-tempo groove informed by multiple genres, the Scotland-based alternative hip-hop trio composed of Alloysious Massaquoi, ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole trade verses and layered harmonies, filled out by worldly percussion elements and undertones of strings, which drop out for the bridge and the lyrics, “Throwing caution to the wind / Let a love pass you by / Send a note to future self / Still awake and alert / Hear the click clang of the belts / The rustling and the leaves, my dear,” before the track swells and samples a snippet about how hot a nuclear fireball is after detonation. They are currently working on their follow-up.
