The Golden Hippie, née Marissa Jack, was born and raised in Phoenix, where she began developing her style and writing songs before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 18 to pursue her music dreams. After years behind the scenes, she scored a break as a featured vocalist on the title track of Prince’s new album, “Art Official Age,” and joined him this spring on tour. Earlier in 2014, she released the song “Smoke Signals,” with haunting and honest lyrics, and featured vocals from Nahko over a gentle acoustic guitar riff that slowly builds from lush to dynamic. More recently, she put out another track, “Human Animal,” combining guitar, strings, and tribal percussion into a dark and invigorating pop song that showcases her powerful and soaring voice. The easy comparison to Charli XCX is more of an insult than a compliment, as the Golden Hippie’s music is full of so much more substance and intrigue than the aforementioned British alt-pop singer has to offer. The Golden Hippie is currently finishing her up her debut full-length album, which will be out in the new year on Hundred Handed records.
