The back story of Lili Haydn’s new album “Lililand” makes the free-spirited video for the song “My My, Cross the Line” all the more magical. To review: Her first album in six years was made as the singer-songwriter-violinist recovered from the effects of a domestic chemical accident that, among other illnesses, inflicted brain damage. The song, co-written with Marvin Etzioni and Itai Disraeli, has its own strange twist; Haydn says she failed to realize when she wrote it “that the chorus was almost the exact same melody as David Essex’s ‘Rock On.’ By the time I was alerted to this fact, the song was too far along to change, so I reached out to Essex to split the song.†The video, meanwhile, was directed by Henry Barrial using the 8mm application on an iPhone 5 and finds Haydn regaling the denizens of Venice. If you’re familiar with Haydn’s work over four full-lengths and an EP, or have seen her live, you’ll swear at the end of the video she’s going to walk on water and not just stare at it.
||| Live: Lil Haydn plays the Mimosa Music Series at the Federal Bar on Sunday and joins in for KPFK-FM’s Holiday Concert & Benefit at Catalina’s Jazz Club on Dec. 20.
