Ears Wide Open: Le Noire

The first song from Le Noire is true to the band’s name, dark and pulsing, a heady throwback to the days of “alternative” rock that recalls a less fuzzed-out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (or the recent work of Dexy Valentine’s side project Bonfire Beach). At the front of the L.A.-based quartet is Dominican songstress Sohanny Rose, who co-wrote the single “Fire” with drummer Nate Lotz and recorded it with guitarist Aaron Andersen, bassist Omar Ahmed and producer Eli Thomson (Everest, Delta Spirit, Richard Swift and Ivan & Alyosha) at New Monkey Studios in Van Nuys. It’s a far cry from Rose’s roots as a Latin pop singer (as a young Sohanny Gross, she performed in the last incarnation of Miami Sound Machine), but in Le Noire it’s about rock ’n’ roll, a little bit dirty and psychedelic, and very sultry. Le Noire’s debut EP is in the works. Meanwhile, the video for “Fire,” the directorial debut of Brian Harrison, has already garnered a handful of honors. It’s all about what the eye perceives and what the mind interprets.
