Southern California natives POP ETC have largely been off the radar since 2012, when, after two albums as the Morning Benders, they changed their name (long story) and set out in an synth-pop direction, releasing a self-titled album on Rough Trade. The band – brothers Chris and Jon Chu and Julian Harmon, now based in Brooklyn – spent part of 2014 in Japan, and the rest at their home base working on new material and toying with the occasional cover song. POP ETC will kick off the new year by releasing a new single, “Running in Circles,” a straight-up nod to ’80s disco-pop. Chris Chu says the tune is about “losing track of where you are and where your life is taking you … losing someone or something close to you and the disorientation that follows.†So … dance your bewilderment away?
