Video: Ariel Pink, ‘Dayzed Inn Daydreams’

Director Grant Singer’s brilliant video for Ariel Pink’s “Dayzed Inn Daydreams” stars eccentric rocker Rick Wilder, once of Hollywood bad boys the Mau Mau’s and the Berlin Brats. Filmed near Bakersfield, it follows a very haggard Wilder, a past-his-expiration-date rocker working at a grocery store, as he encounters Pink, who had played the town the night before. Since it was filmed as part of a retailer’s video series, there’s a lot of blah-blah-blah about what the principals are wearing, but that’s not to detract from the premise that where reckless lifestyles have sabotaged careers, that where decades of obscurity can render you a footnote in everybody’s mind but your own, dreams live on, whether you want them to or not. It’s a perfect storyline for the song, one of the highlight’s of Pink’s recent album “Pom Pom.” “Lord, help me / no more daydreams,” Pink sings in the song, inhabiting, possibly, the poignant resignation of all fallen stars in the lines: “My will survives /
In a thousand future lives / And with that / I bid adieu.”
