Ears Wide Open: Ghost Hours

Before we talk about Ghost Hours, a pop quiz: Who is Ron Fountenberry? One point if you remember the SoftLightes, the indie-pop quartet who were the first American act on the Australian label Modular (and included among its members Kristian Dunn and Tim Fogarty, who went on to form El Ten Eleven). Their album “Say No to Being Cool – Say Yes to Being Happy” was ahead of its time, if you consider where indie-pop has gone since 2007. Two points if you remember that, before SoftLightes, Fountenberry was the Incredible Moses Leroy, channeling his inner MJ on a 2003 album of Postal Service-on-happy-pills electro-pop. Three points if you know that the San Diego-based Fountenberry has been paying the bills writing commercial jingles, with no fewer than 30 major clients. How’d you do? Ghost Hours is Fountenberry’s new guise — “a fresh start,” he calls it — and the songwriter says he plans to release a couple songs “every month or so.” The introductory single “Can’t Stop Moving,” with its cuddly synths, nimble beat and Fountenberry’s ’60s soul croon, bridges the gap between pop’s then and now. Go ahead, try to stop moving.
