Coachella 2015: Father John Misty, yours truly

Memorable Because: Where to begin with Josh Tillman’s return to Coachella after his unforgettable 2013 show? With the start of his 10-song set, illuminated only by a neon heart in the back with script reading “No Photography?” It’s funny he would disdain Kodak moments when his new album “I Love You, Honeybear” is one big Hallmark card. With his wry humor? “I’m honored to have all the depressive, sad bastard people here,” he said. “We deserve representation at this thing.” With his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “I’m Your Man,” sung to a female audience member seated onstage? The dancers made that weird. With his maniacally theatrical performance of eight songs from the new album, along with one oldie, “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sign?” Nobody breaks the fourth wall like Tillman, an honest man trapped in a profession where honesty is regarded as a conceit. It’s only going to get stranger, honeybear.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was Trying to Take Pictures: Tillman’s wife is a photographer.

It’s so “strange” to me that performers are hung up on picture taking in this era of tech. There’s a lot I think and feel about the “new” direction Josh chose to go in being that I was the one on drums at that 2013 unforgettable coachella performance. But I’ll just say I love rock n roll and being lifted up through music. Both of which seem to be in short supply based on what I saw…onward and upward!!!
Interesting review, can’t quite tell if it’s positive.
Aaron, just because you played drums for him at one point doesn’t give you a right to talk shit in a passive aggressive way about an ex-employer publicly. Apart from being extremely unprofessional it’s also a dick move.
Sorry if you were offended Krump. The new group of musicians are a fine lot. and Josh is still a hip daddy. I just like to rock and don’t really get that at the moment. It’s ok not to please everyone all the time. But the employer remark is kinda square and it’s why I started bands to begin with cuz I don’t dig working for someone else. It’s the rock n roller in me. I take it you’re a professional so you’re probably good at submission.
I love how the Internet allows one poster to hand out admonishments to another, who was actually stating a more-than-routine internet opinion.
Don’t ever change Internet.
