Coachella 2015: Drake, falling flat in the spotlight

Who:Â Drake on the Main Stage
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â Gave me woes.
Memorable Because:Â “Make some noise for yourselves!” This was a phrase Drake often used during his Coachella set as he closed out Weekend 1. It was an odd request at first but then became an annoying one as he repeatedly inserted the phrase between his almost-songs. Despite his attempt go pump the crowd up and “Kill this motherf–ker” for his mom, Drake’s set fell rather flat while he performed snippets of his own song and his guest verses on other artists’ songs. While he was doing his best to interact with the crowd up front, the rest of the crowd (which at the start was even bigger than last year’s crowd for Calvin Harris) began to walk out. However, some stopped when Madonna made a surprise appearance to perform bits from “Human Nature” and “Hung Up.” The keyword here is “some” since the camera did not zoom in to confirm it was Madonna nor did these two songs come off as recognizable to the majority of young’uns in the crowd. The pop star’s choice to make out with Drake and walk off stage after saying “Bitch, I’m Madonna!” not only left festival goers confused, but also left Drake perplexed as to what he may have agreed to let happen during his set. Striving to bring his set full-circle shortly afterward, Drake continued with “Know Yourself,” “Started From the Bottom” and the crossover radio hit “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” Too bad some of us were already on our way home at this point.
