Who: Night Terrors of 1927 in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Coming on strong.
Memorable Because: Jarrod Gorbel’s big, round voice is at the forefront of NTO1927’s anthems of love and longing, but it’s the gang choruses that stick in your head. The L.A. five-piece had no trouble selling a one-third-full tent on the latter, eliciting some “whoa-oh-ohs” on “Fall Into You” and “Dust and Bones.” “We are waking you up,” he told the lunch-hour crowd. “We are lifting you up with positive spirits.” The wake-up call was welcome — and (wink, wink) the quintet covered the Romantics’ “Talking in Your Sleep” — but Gorbel’s songwriting partner Blake Sennett must’ve still be high on his morning coffee. Animated throughout, Sennett broke a guitar string, potentially disastrous when you’re limited to a 35-minute festival set. “I feel like it’s high drama on the high seas,” he said, recovering nicely. The distaff half of the boy/girl vocals on the single “When You Were Mine” (sung by Tegan and Sara on Night Terrors’ album) were performed by Cecilia Della Peruti (Gothic Tropic), who with bassist Nicole Fiorentino (The Cold and Lovely, ex-Smashing Pumpkins) is a recent addition to the live lineup.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Slept In: You can sleep when Coachella’s dead.
