Video: Open Mike Eagle, ‘Celebrity Reduction Prayer’

Is there an app yet that pings you every time Open Mike Eagle opens his mouth? Because the L.A. rapper does not disappoint. His new jam is a broadside at idol worship titled “Celebrity Reduction Prayer” [I got to this late, I know, but think of it as a great companion piece to yesterday’s “All Mine (Real Bitches)”]. Over sweet, slippery production from Oddisee, Open Mike Eagle rails against celebrity culture and its soul-sucking effects. “It gets ingrained and we start behaving like a sheep do / This song is a prayer you should aim it where you need to,” he raps. Meanwhile, director Ryan Calavano’s video for the song makes you want to get Daryl the Janitor’s autograph yourself. The song appears on the Mello Music Group compilation “Persona” that was released in March.
