As a band now almost 40 years young, post-punk forefathers Wire visited the Echo on Saturday night behind the April release of their 14th album, a self-titled collection. Singer-guitarist Colin Newman, bassist Graham Lewis and drummer Robert Grey — all original members — were joined by guitarist Matthew Simms (a touring member the past five years) and an hour-plus of the band’s distinctly rhythmic and idiosyncratic rock. The new album was their second in as many years, and as Wire has prevailed over the decades as an influential band, they also remain a creative force. As Newman said upon the release of the new album: “We’re in it for the long haul and this is a one-way trip.” The crowd at the sold-out Echo was happy to be along for the ride. Mild High Club opened the show.
