Premiere: TETE, ‘Newblood’

Los Angeles quartet TETE find their antecedents in dream-pop pioneers like the Cocteau Twins and the ethereal enchantresses in the 4AD catalog. And their new conjuration, “Newblood,” suggests we keep a wary eye on the swirling dark clouds overhead, if not the person standing next to you in the club. “Somebody like you / I’ll never be” they chant, as if willing themselves a safe distance from poisonous spirits. “Newblood,” out via Manimal, is the follow-up to last November’s single “Wires” and finds the foursome — Jax Cingolani (Darklands/Spirit Vine), Kimi Recor (Draemings/Black Flamingo) Amberlie Bankoff (Black Flamingo) and recently added drummer Paige Stark (Tashaki Miyaki) — spiraling further toward darkwave. Last summer we suggested they might be Darth Vader’s answer to another Manimal alum, Warpaint. Still applies.
