Video: Ducktails, ‘Surreal Exposure’

A little gentle stalking goes a long way in Ducktails’ friendly music video for “Surreal Exposure.” Matt Mondanile creeps around a Far Rockaway, Queens, home with recording devices and binoculars while musician Mac DeMarco strums a guitar inside, until Mondanile gathers the courage to knock on the door. What ensues is a comically awkward exchange between the guys, a rowboat ride, some abuse via cactus plant, culminating in a shower scene. Anchored by acoustic guitar and a gentle piano melody, “Surreal Exposure” is very easy on the ears. Listen deeper and a whole wash of sounds become palpable from ear to ear, elevating the tune as something a little more sophisticated than a breezy hook. The song is the second tune released from his new album, “St. Catherine,” out July 24 on Domino, his fifth full-length release as Ducktails (recognize Mondanile from his other band, Real Estate), and produced by Rob Schnapf, co-producer of Elliott Smith’s treasured albums “XO” and “Either/Or.” Recorded in East L.A,. Glendale, Berlin and New York, expect a collection of blissful pop, melodic guitar and unexpected electronic treats (plus a guest turn from L.A.’s Julia Holter).
