Ears Wide Open: Joe Plummer

Joe Plummer is a busy man. He drums for the Shins and Cold War Kids. He’s also played with Modest Mouse and the Black Heart Procession. And there’s another side project — Coromandelles — with Tijuana Panthers’ Daniel Michicoff and Cold War Kids bassist Matt Maust. Still, Plummer has found enough nooks and crannies in his schedule to create “Built in the Sun,” coming Aug. 7 via People in a Position to Know Records. After initially imagining the project as an instrumental idea — with inspirations ranging from John Cale’s “Fear” to composers Jon Brion and Clint Mansell — Plummer decided to add vocals to the music he had recorded with multi-instrumentalist/producer Richard Swift. The Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins answered the call. The lead track “Honeybear” is a clamorous garage-rocker, the kind of thing you might expect from a heavy hitter, all full of piss and vinegar and under three minutes.
