Twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz of Ibeyi love hip hop. Today they released “Exhibit Diaz,” a reworking of a Jay Electronica track that has been a favorite part of their live set. Jay Electronica came out with the original, “Better In Tune With The Infinite,” in 2014, after a long absence from the rap world. He sampled a piano line from Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Bibo no Aozora,” which was featured in the 2006 film “Babel” and the lyrics express his hesitation to release introspective music in a world that’s very quick to judge, and yet the need for an artist to express urges him on. Ibeyi slowed things down for their version, turned his rap into a pretty melody, and added their signature Afro-Cuban, trip-hop influenced minimalist flair of percussion, loops and piano. The music video finds the song taking on a softer yet equally poignant meaning translated through their gentle voices. “Exhibit Diaz” was produced by XL Recordings label owner Richard Russell at his Residence La Revolution studio in London last month. The duo, the daughters of the late Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz, released their self-titled debut in the U.S. this week.
