If somewhere in the maelstrom of L.A. there truly is a slow lane, Dream Legal is going to find it. The new venture is the collaboration between Matthew Compton (Electric Guest) and Matt Popieluch (Big Search, Foreign Born), whose mission, they say, is “to examine the surreal underbelly of memory and consciousness in Los Angeles … using large keyboards.” The pair have been working on recordings off and on for several years, and releases will be forthcoming on the new L.A. label Grand Gallop, the imprint founded by Luke Top of Fool’s Gold (Popieluch played in the early incarnation of that band). The first song to emerge is the languid “Palm Beach,” with its lush keyboards, island vibe and Popieluch’s rich, melancholic vocals. If, as the video suggests, you’re the kind who can stare at the surf and hallucinate, here is the soundtrack to your visions.
