The San Diego Music Thing — a music and media conference that’s kind of a mini-South by Southwest held in a city with really great fish tacos — has announced a lineup topped by Yo La Tengo, Blitzen Trapper, No Age, the Joy Formidable, L7, Viet Cong, Milo Greene, In the Valley Below and AA Bondy.
Held in September in past years, SDMT moves later this year, kicking off Wednesday, Nov. 11 and running through Saturday, Nov. 14. Like last year, there will be an outdoor stage — the Joy Formidable, L7, Milo Greene, the Moth & the Flame, Chicano Batman and others will play Saturday outside the Observatory North Park.
In all, there will be about 60 bands playing venues such as the Observatory, the Casbah, Bar Pink, the Hideout, the Irenic and the Soda Bar. Panels will be held Thursday and Friday at the Lafayette Hotel.
Individual tickets for all SDMT showcases are available here.
Musician-author-lecturer Greg Graffin of Bad Religion is this year’s keynote speaker. Other featured speakers include drummer-writer-filmmaker Martin Atkins (“Tour:Smart”), who has worked with the likes of Public Image Ltd, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails and others, and Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit, who will be doing a Friday night solo set as well at the Irenic.
Three-day badges are $60; single-day badges are $30; both give attendees access to the conference and the evening shows.
