The La Brea Tar Pits Park had many different personas on Saturday afternoon during the 13th annual Tarfest. Gavin Turek turned the park into a dance party at dusk. That was after the Shelters did their best to make it a rock arena. Which came after Jessica Childress and her band turned it into a soul revue. And after Babes did their best to make it a frolicsome, sibling-fueled pop picnic. And Salt Petal beat the heat with some breezy tropicalia.
The diverse selection of music was only part of the story. Besides the festival’s usual array of art, there were live paintings by Greg “Craola” Simkins, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez and Joseph Lee; two performances by the youngsters in the troupe “Move The World – Dance Activism;” and all manner of family activities. And shade, where you could find it. Above, a gallery of the musicians; below, some of the rest of what went down.
